Plaster and lath: questions before a wall strip-out

What extra information helps scope an older plaster wall without assuming it is drywall?
Share the known material records and identify which layers and decorative junctions need assessment before an older wall is stripped.
Describe what is known
Use the room and wall reference from the renovation plan. If a report identifies plaster and lath, share that record; if the description is only an impression, mark it as unconfirmed. Age and appearance alone do not settle the material composition or the condition of what lies behind it.
Ask which layers are in scope
A finish-only request differs from removing the finish and its backing. Identify whether the receiving trade needs framing exposed or a retained surface left in place. Do not infer that a wall can be removed because its face is being stripped. Structural function and concealed services remain separate assessment questions.
Look beyond the flat wall face
Record cornices, ceiling junctions, skirting, door trim and adjoining rooms that must remain. The key question is how to describe the interface between removed and retained work. Decorative features should be identified before a scope is agreed, without promising that every attached piece can be recovered intact.
Resolve information before comparing proposals
Provide the applicable material report and ask the assessor to identify unresolved areas. The Ontario asbestos guide describes the role of location and material information before affected work is arranged; it is not a visual identification checklist. A proposal based on confirmed layers is different from one carrying unresolved assumptions. Keep those assumptions visible and refer specialist assessment or abatement to the appropriate provider.
Details to bring to the discussion
Use the points below to explain the unresolved decisions when you contact the relevant service.
