How should retained planting, paving and trees be shown beside a removal area?

Map retained planting, paving and trees beside both the removal footprint and the access route, with separate approval questions where relevant.

Map more than the structure leaving

Show the shed, deck or fence together with nearby planting beds, paths and trees intended to remain. Add the proposed loading area and access route to the same sketch. A feature can sit outside the removal outline yet still be beside the route used to reach it.

Distinguish movable items from retained landscape

List furniture, planters and ornaments the owner will deal with separately. Fixed planting, trees, paving and irrigation questions need their own assessment. Do not describe a tree as movable or a garden bed as expendable merely because it stands near the requested work. Record unresolved decisions rather than hiding them in a general yard-clearance instruction.

Use the relevant tree and ravine process

Toronto provides separate tree and ravine protection guidance. Check the applicable requirements for the actual property before agreeing to work that may affect protected features. A boundary sketch does not establish permission or define an arborist's protection requirements. Outside Toronto, use the responsible municipality or authority.

Agree the handover limitations

Ask which surfaces will remain untouched, what temporary arrangements need assessment and who handles subsequent landscape work. Removal is not automatically a landscaping service. A useful example identifies a retained path and garden bed beside a shed, then asks the contractor to assess both the demolition boundary and the route through the yard.

Details to bring to the discussion

Use the points below to explain the unresolved decisions when you contact the relevant service.

  • Removal outline
  • Retained landscape features
  • Access and loading footprint
  • Tree/ravine question for the authority
  • Separate landscape restoration responsibility
