Removing a permanent staircase during a commercial refit

Anchor Demolition Scarborough · Reviewed

A permanent staircase is part of a building arrangement, not a loose fixture to add casually to a clearout. Distinguish removal of stair finishes from removal of the stair assembly before asking Anchor to assess a commercial refit.

Identify the assembly and the future layout

Show the stair, landings, surrounding floors and retained rooms on the project drawings. The responsible designer establishes structural roles, replacement access and any support requirements. An owner wanting an open floor does not by itself define how the stair can leave.

Anchor's commercial demolition service is the assessment route for an appropriate reviewed building-removal package. This page does not claim stair engineering, fabrication or specialist rigging capacity.

The material also matters to assessment. A concrete stair question belongs with the concrete service, but neither material nor appearance establishes a method or accepted scope.

Plan the building between stages

The owner, GC and responsible professionals decide access to retained floors while the stair changes. Name the party providing temporary arrangements and the contractor installing the replacement or closing the former opening. No uninterrupted-access promise follows from a demolition enquiry.

For an illustrative refit, the design removes an obsolete internal stair while retaining rooms on both levels. The demolition boundary includes reviewed connections and named surrounding finishes. The replacement construction and final floor condition belong to the receiving contractors. A finish-only refurbishment would leave the stair assembly and require a much narrower removal description.

Request a project-specific assessment

Contact Anchor with the design status, stair material if known, retained-floor plan and professional contacts. Use the trade handover guide to identify the condition left for the next contractor. If support or access is unresolved, keep that dependency explicit rather than treating it as ordinary demolition already accepted.
