What Fits in a Bin: Planning Debris Removal for a Home Demolition

By Anchor Demolition Scarborough

A demolition bin is for approved construction material within the provider's loading and weight rules, not every item found in a house. Separate hazardous waste, liquids, cylinders and materials governed by special handling before loading begins.

Good bin planning connects the waste stream, container size, driveway access and pickup route instead of treating them as separate decisions.

Sort before loading

Wood, drywall, masonry and mixed construction loads may be directed differently. Ask the receiving provider what is accepted and never assume a material belongs because it came from the building.

Before committing to a method, document what stays, what goes and what condition the site must be in for the next trade. Photographs, measurements and a walk-through reduce assumptions. Permit, utility and designated-substance requirements must be resolved for the actual property rather than inferred from a similar job.

Weight matters

Concrete, soil and masonry become heavy quickly and may need dedicated loads. Keeping heavy material separate can make loading and disposal more predictable.

Placement controls the workflow

The truck needs a clear approach and retrieval path. Public roadway, sidewalk, boulevard or laneway occupation requires a City Street Occupation Permit.

Keep prohibited material out

Fuel, paint, chemicals, cylinders and unidentified liquids need approved disposal. Suspected asbestos-containing material is governed by O. Reg. 278/05 rather than ordinary bin handling.

When professional help makes sense

A professional site review makes sense when the work affects a building, buried or overhead services, a shared boundary, structural elements, hazardous materials or the public right-of-way. Anchor Demolition Scarborough reviews access and the requested handover, then puts the demolition scope in writing before work is scheduled.
