By Anchor Demolition Scarborough

Toronto generally prohibits construction and demolition noise from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays, from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturdays, and all day Sundays and statutory holidays. Check the current Municipal Code Chapter 591 and any site-specific exemption before scheduling.

The bylaw defines construction broadly enough to include demolition, dismantling, land clearing and earth-moving.

Plan noisy work inside permitted periods

Machine work, breaking and loading should be scheduled around the current restrictions. A crew can still use quieter periods for lawful setup or housekeeping only where that activity complies with the bylaw.

Exemptions are separate approvals

Work outside permitted hours may require a Noise Exemption Permit. The City advises applying well in advance, and approval is not automatic.

Before committing to a method, document what stays, what goes and what condition the site must be in for the next trade. Photographs, measurements and a walk-through reduce assumptions. Permit, utility and designated-substance requirements must be resolved for the actual property rather than inferred from a similar job.

Neighbour communication still matters

Toronto's construction guidance recommends notifying neighbours, explaining the expected duration and providing a contact. Compliance is the minimum; orderly staging and prompt debris removal reduce avoidable disruption.

When to bring in a professional

A professional site review makes sense when the work affects a building, buried or overhead services, a shared boundary, structural elements, hazardous materials or the public right-of-way. Anchor Demolition Scarborough reviews access and the requested handover, then puts the demolition scope in writing before work is scheduled.
